I’ve always found the New Year to be a period that’s both incredibly exciting and somewhat perplexing. On the one hand, our understanding of time is arbitrary. On the other hand, modern life moves so quickly I think we genuinely need a specific date to remind us, year after year, that we should always work to improve ourselves. Most New Year’s resolutions are admirable, such as cutting alcohol and quitting smoking. Others have become jokes, and I want to take aim at the most common one this year: lose weight.
How much you weigh isn’t the problem, it’s what you’re doing to get there. And instead of promising to throw ourselves at the gym and sweating our ass off for three weeks we should have a proper look at how we should fix this. Losing weight is admirable, yes, but it’s better to not eat less, but to eat better. Are you eating healthy? Are you making sustainable changes to your lifestyle to make sure you don’t just lose weight, but you actually keep it off? This is my resolution in 2019, to simply eat better, and these are the three rules I shall follow to see it through.
Rule 1: The Best Lunch Is Made At Home
A lot of our bad eating is done in our day to day lives, not simply the weekend. Do you bring lunch from home or do you order in? It’s probably the latter, and you only stop to think about this right around Christmas time when none of your pants or tops fit. How do you react? You start making couscous and quinoa for lunch, and by January 21st you’re fed up of your salads and you’re digging into a pizza.
Hence, put just a little bit more effort into making your own lunches at home! Prepare a nice pasta salad at home, grill some salmon, or even take leftovers with you! It’ll make a bigger difference than you realise! This is the first rule of our resolution this year: Don’t Eat Less, Eat Better.
Rule 2: If You’re Ordering In, Make it Worthwhile
On the Netflix show Cooked an expert said that to tackle weight loss we should be allowed to eat what we want. Crazy, right? He genuinely believes that if we want a slice of chocolate cake, we should have it. Hell, have the entire cake! But first do one thing: bake it yourself.
Oh what a wonderful saying, and one that lies at the heart of my second rule. I’m not saying that we should completely eliminated takeaways and delivery, but if you’re going to order delivery make it really worth it. Go for genuine experiences that are worth your while, not a soggy €5 burger, cold nachos, or a pizza so deeply fried the it’s giving George W Bush a special tingling feeling. This is the second rule of our resolution this year: Don’t Eat Less, Eat Better.
Rule 3: Get Physical
