This Is Gidma Gidma

I like to say that Maltese society stands on three pillars: Food, Politics, and Religion.

In that order.

I now feel it would be patronising to say that food is what brings us together as a people, however food is definitely a shared passion of every single Maltese person I’ve met. Be they voracious carnivores, passionate vegetarians, or Earth-conscious vegans, food has always been a point upon which any conversation can be built.

So why start a blog?

The food scene in Malta has absolutely blown up over the last ten years. At every level in the sector food has gotten better and more varied. We’re no longer limited to a few family friendly ‘Italian’ restaurants and Chinese eateries with so much oil in their food the US State Department can’t help drooling. Now we have genuine smokehouses, proper Italian trattorias and pizzerias, Japanese restaurants, Vietnamese restaurants, noodle bars, sushi bars, gin bars…the list is nearly endless. It’s remarkable too that cheap food has (to some extent) become of higher quality, and healthy options are increasing by the minute.

This new, rich food scene is exactly why I’m founding Gidma Gidma. This site is dedicated to exploring the contemporary Maltese food scene in all its succulent detail. We’ll be writing features on restaurants, exploring hot new bars, writing guides for the best places to eat in Malta & Gozo, and bringing to you classic and innovative recipes, across a variety of media.

This is a small start, to be sure, but there’s plenty more coming, and I hope you’ll join us for the ride!
